Glazes Flashcards
Glass formin chemicals, usually with colorants added, that applied in liquid form to bisque ware and fired in a kiln. Glossy coating to clay.
Glaze
A shiny, glass like finish.
Gloss
Coating applied to the top of the kiln shelves to protect them from glaze drips.
Kiln wash
A soft finish with little or no shine.
Matte
Color which doesn’t allow other colors to show through.
Opaque
A satin-like surface which has a sunlight-like sheen to it.
Semi-Matte
Colors that generally allow only dark colors to show through.
Semi-Opaque
Slightly colored/or speckled color which allow most colors to show through.
Semi-Transparent
Clear base which doesn’t have cloudiness or distortion.
Transparent
A color which is usually applied to greenware in most cases is covered with a glaze.
Underglaze
Thin coat of glaze that will soak into the greenware.
