Misha’s Vineyard, Dress Circle Pinot Gris 2021
Central Otago (Bendigo)
Region Info

A

Bendigo is a sub-region 55 kilometers (35 miles) from the tourist resort town of Queenstown in the South Island of New Zealand, mainly associated with the Pinot Noir grape variety. It is in the eastern part of Central Otago, and the northern slopes of the Dunstan mountain range provide a spectacular perch for the vineyards. Hot, sunny days during the growing season are followed by much cooler nights, helping to slow the ripening process and allowing grapes to retain acidity as they develop rich flavor complexity. The long, dry autumns help with this as well. Moreover, a lack of humidity and rain during these months decreases the chances of vine diseases, and the grapes have a correspondingly long hang time.

Region Info

It is a remote, rural area with a unique microclimate and soils. It is known for its intense, full-bodied red wines made from old-vine Garnacha and Samso/Cariñena. Priorat wines gained international recognition in the 1990s. The region boasts terraced vineyards that cling to steep slopes, creating a dramatic landscape. These terraces help maximize sun exposure and allow the vines to thrive. Priorat’s slate soils (known as “llicorella”) contribute to the unique character of its wines. The minerality associated with Priorat wines is partly attributed to these distinct soils. The classic Priorat red wine is made primarily from old-vine Garnacha (Grenache) and Samso (also known as Cariñena). These grapes yield intense, full-bodied wines with concentrated aromas of licorice, tar, and brandied cherries.
