Why Glasgow med school course?

A

PBL (Phase 1 and 2):
- Presenting problem at the start of the week, gathering info through the week and then debrief at end
- Diverse range of ideas
- Engage with content

CBL (Phase 3):
- In each session, 2 cases based on weeks learning, talk through
- No additional work outside session
- See the clinical application
- Quite unusual

Vocational studies:
- Ethics, communication skills, examinations and practical procedures in phase 1 and 2
- Dedicated space for this
- Creates doctors not exam passers

‘Spiral curriculum’:
- Building on content by revisiting and adding more detail
- Better for long-term recall

Two electives:
- One after 3rd year and one after 4th
- Get the most experience in the widest variety of environments

- Opportunity to focus further on personal interests

Who is responsible for NHS Scotland?

A

Responsibility for the National Health Services in Scotland is a devolved matter and therefore rests with the Scottish Government. Legislation about the NHS is made by the Scottish Parliament. The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing has ministerial responsibility in the Scottish Cabinet for the NHS in Scotland.

What are the NHS Boards?

A

NHS Boards in Scotland are all-purpose organisations: they plan, commission and deliver NHS services and take overall responsibility for the health of their populations. They therefore plan and commission hospital and community health services including services provided by GPs, dentists, community pharmacists and opticians, who are independent contractors.

There are 14 NHS Boards covering the whole of Scotland.
