Glands Flashcards
Glandular epithelium
- produce secretions
- either into duct or blood
Endocrine glands
- blood
- hormones
Hormone secretion patterns:
Chronic -e.g. TSH
Acute -e.g.Adrenaline
Episodic e.g. FSH/LH
Diseases of the endocrine system:
- Hypofunction (underfunction)
- Hyperfunction (overfunction)
Graves disease
-thyroid gland
Cushings disease
-adrenal glands
Exocrine
-released through ducts onto epithelial surfaces
Structure of exocrine glands:
- unicellular
- multicellular
- secretory sheet = simples multicellular gland
- pocket of gland cells
Merocrine gland
-vesicle releasing contents into duct
Apocrine gland
-pinched-off portion of cell in the secretion
Holocrine gland
-Dying cell releases secretory products
Serous secretion
-watery containing enzymes
Mucous
secrete mucins which hydrate to form mucus
Some glands can be both exo and endocrine
-pancreas
Pancreatitis
- enzymes activated within pancreas
- caused by alcoholism or gallstones
- pain in centre of abdomen
