Glaciers Flashcards
What is the zone of accumulation?
Place where glacier is being added to^^
Snow falls here 🥶❄️☃️
What is a snout?
End of glacier.
Where ablation takes place (makes glacier smaller)
(..?..)stream is located where the ice melts and turns into water and flows away.
MELTWATER
What altitude is at the bottom of a glacier?
Low altitude
Name the 4 types of ablation and what they involve.
Calving- breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier
Sublimation- ice becomes vapour
Evaporation- water is heated into vapour
Melting- ice is melted to become water
What is weathering?
Break down of rocks without transport or movement
What is erosion?
Wearing away of rocks during or because of TRANSPORT
WATER- river, sea
WIND- desert
ICE- glaciers
WEATHERING: freeze thaw: describe the process
1) Crack in rock in day, fills with water
2) At night temperature falls below 0°c WATER—>ICE. Expands by 9% so pushes crack open—> bigger
3) During day, ice melts- contracts falls further into crack.
4) rock splits in 2
EROSION: abrasion: explain the process
Small rocks, sand, gravel embedded in the glacier as the glacier moves it wears away the valley floor and valley sides acting like sandpaper.
EROSION: plucking: explain the process
Glacier melts due to pressure and refreezes around a sticking out rock. As the glacier moves it plucks the rock out and carries it with it.
