Glaciation Processes of Erosion Flashcards
Plucking
Rocks freeze onto the sides of the glacier, as the glacier moved it pulls out pieces of rock. This leaves the landscape steep and jagged
Abrasion
Rocks (from plucking) at the base of the glacier will stick to it and scour the landscape, which smooths and deepens it
Freeze-Thaw
Meltwater from the glacier will seep into cracks in the rocks, causing the water to freeze and expand. This will happen several times, causing the rocks to eventually break
How Glaciers Form
-Snow falls and doesn’t melt due to aspect and/or altitude where temperatures remain below zero
-The snow builds and compacts together, squeezing the air out. Firstly, this forms neve
-Over time, the sheer weight of the snow and it building each winter fully compresses and turns into true ice
-The glacier then moves downhill due to its weight and gravity, bulldozing and eroding its way through the landscape
