Glaciation Formations Flashcards
Corrie
-Explain how a glacier forms and moves
-Explain processes
-Bwrgshrund forms where the glacier moves away from the Backwall and creates a gap. Rocks can get trapped here and cause more abrasion.
-As the glacier moves downhill, it flows with a rotational movement. This causes more erosion at the back and less erosion at the front, creating a lip and the corrie is deepened
-A tarn can form in the hollow due to the glacier melting and leaving behind a lake
-A corrie has formed and is shown as an armchair shaped hollow on the North side of a mountain
Arete
-Explain how a glacier forms and moves
-Explain processes
-Explain how a corrie forms
-An arete will form when there are two or more corries back to back and only a knife edge ridge separates the two
-The ridge becomes sharper and steeper through freeze thaw
Pyramidal Peak
-Explain how glaciers form and move
-Explain processes
-Explain formation of a corrie
-These form when three or more corries are back to back
-Freeze thaw at the peak makes it very sharp
U-Shaped Valley
-Explain how a glacier forms and moves
-Explain processes (plucking and abrasion)
-Snow can gather in a v-shaped valley or the glacier can move down from a corrie through the valley
-The glacier will bulldoze its way through interlocking spurs, eroding them, and they become truncated spurs
-When the glacier reaches lower altitudes, the temperature is warmer, therefore the glacier will melt
-The glacier will retreat (melt from the snout), leaving behind a u-shaped valley with steep sides and wide, flat and smooth valley floor
Ribbon Lake
-Explain how a glacier forms and moves
-Explain processes
-Explain a u-shaped valley
-Where there are bands of hard and soft rock on the floor of the u-shaped valley, a ribbon lake can form
Hanging Valley
-Explain how a glacier forms and moves
-Explain processes
-Explain a u-shaped valley
-Hanging valleys form where a glacier flows through a tributary valley, carves out the landscape, and meets the main valley, high up on the side of the u-shaped valley
