Glaciation Flashcards
1
Q
Plucking?
A
Ice freezes onto rock and pull along loose fragments as it continues to move downhill. Leaves a rough and jagged surface
2
Q
How is a corrie formed?
A
- snow collects in North facing hollows high in the mountains
- snow squeezed into ice
- more snow builds up, fills hollow, some squeezed out and by gravity, forced down mountainside
- backwall and sides were frost shattered and plucked at the same time
- at edge of hollow ice less thick
- ice melts forming a tarn
3
Q
Formation of u shaped valley?
A
- glacier fills former v-shaped valley
- glacier freezes onto loose rock fragments and plucks them
- increases erosive powers of glacier allowing more abrasion
- the glacier takes the easiest route i.e. The former river valley
- former valley Spurs are truncated
- when ice retreats the former river returns to the valley but now doesn’t fill the valley floor and is known as a misfit stream
- part of the valley floor is made up of softer rock this will erode even softer scooping out a deeper hollow
- this fills with water and forms a ribbon lake eg. Loch lomond
4
Q
Uses of glacial erosion?
A
CORRIES
•steep slopes and cold snowy winters attract skiers
•lochs as tourist attractions
•lochs can be used as reservoirs for hydroelectric power schemes
U-SHAPED VALLEY
•steep sides often forested
•people can farm and build on flat valley floors
5
Q
Tourist vs farmers?
A
- walkers with dogs may scare sheep
- tourists leaving gates open allowing animals to escape
- tourists drop litter which animals may eat
- walking over farmers crops destroys them
- tourists cause footpath erosion in farmers land
- farmers may restrict land
6
Q
Explanation for land use?
A
DEER STALKING •too high for trees to grow •deer are nimble footed FORESTRY •area too high for crop growth •poorer soils are suitable for coniferous trees FARMING AND SETTLEMENT •lower land, better climate •flat areas for crop growth ANCIENT FORT •top of hill, good defence site
7
Q
Abrasion?
A
Ice uses materials it carries to scrape and smooth the land over which it is moving, like sandpaper
