Glaciation Flashcards
Antarctica has how many % of the world’s total glaciation?
85%. Greenland has 11%.
What’s a glacier?
Slow moving masses of ice. Begins when the Earth’s climate cools, and snow gradually accumulates over thousands of years.
Alpine glaciers move under what?
Gravity
Continental glaciers move under what?
Their own weight.
What’s the zone of accumulation?
The area of the glacier where snow builds up and turns into ice.
What’s the zone of ablation?
The opposite of accumulation. It’s the loss of mass from snow or ice.
What’s front advance?
Snow accumulation>rate of melting
What’s stationary front?
Snow accumulation=the rate of melting
What’s retreating front?
Rate of melting>rate of snowfall
What happens if glacial ice melts?
▪️sea levels will rise
▪️flooding
