Q

How does a glacier form

A
  1. Form in very cold places when lots of snow falls but doesn’t melt so there are layers of snow on top of each other
  2. Bottom layers of snow are compressed pushing air out and snow turns to ice forming a glacier
  3. Glacier gradually moves down slope due to gravity

Q

How is V shaped valley formed

A

Before glaciation V shaped valley formed by river and during ice age the ice moves down the valley
Rock gets trapped in the bottom of ice and acts like sandpaper wearing away valley by abrasion
Glacier deepens, straightens and widens valley by abrasion
After ice me,t V shaped valley remains

Q

What is a recessional moraine

A

Similar to terminal moraines but are found at the snout of the glacier where it remained at the same point for sufficient time

Q

What is a drumlin

A

Glaciers move moraines around - a drumlin is a mound of deposited moraine - have a steep side and sloping side. Can be 1 km long or 50m in width or height

Q

What does abrasion mean

A

The moraine frozen into glacier grinds the valley sides and base like sandpaper (widening the valley)

Q

What is plucking

A

Water at bottom of glacier freezes onto rock on valley base and as glacier moves the rock is pulled away

Q

What are corries

A

Bowl shaped hollows found on side of a mountain. Form when glacier deepens an existing hollow through freeze- thaw action and plucking. When ice melts this hollow fills with water and form corrie lakes

17
Q

What is an arête

A

Knife edged ridge formed between 2 corries.
When the 2 corries form next to each other their adjacent walls erode backwards till they melt and a narrow pointed rock ridge is formed

18
Q

What is a pyramidal peak

A

Formed when 3 or more corries are formed back to back
