Glaciation Flashcards
what is plucking
Plucking steepens the back wall, Ice freezes onto rocks and pulls fragments away
what is abrasion
Abrasion deepens the hollow, rocks at bottom of the glacier scrape and wear away the land (sandpaper effect)
what is freeze-thaw?
water enters cracks, freeze, expands and thaws widening the crack. this is repeated until the crack fores the rock to break apart
What is rotational slip?
when ice moves downhill in a circular movement
what is a tarn?
small mountain lake left in area when the glacier melts
what is a corrie lip?
A corrie lip forms where less erosion takes place. When the glacier melts, this traps meltwater inside the hollow to form a corrie lock or tarn
what is a corrie?
its an armchair shaped hollow on a high mountain with steep back and side walls. after glaciation it may fill with ice.
what is an arete?
a sharp mountain edge made from two corries facing back to back
what is a pyrimidal peak?
a sharp mountain peak formed by three or more corries back to back
what is a hanging valley?
are former tribuary glacier valley - smaller valley that meet the main glaciated valley
explain what a ribbon lake and misfit stream is
misfit stream - stream occupying valley
ribbon lake - long ass lake running through U/V shaped valley
how do truncated spurs form?
by interlocking spurs created by a river
Explain the formation of a corrie
Ice gathers on the less sunny north and east-facing slopes, it compacts and turns into ice. This is known as neve. it moves downhill due to gravity
Plucking (explain what plucking does)
Abrasion (explain what abrasion does)
Rotational slip (explain what rotational slip is)
Corrie lip (explain how corrie lip forms)
Explain the formation of an arete
Ice gathers on the less sunny north and east-facing slopes, it compacts and turns into ice. This is known as neve. it moves downhill due to gravity
Plucking (explain what plucking does)
Abrasion (explain what abrasion does)
Rotational slip (explain what rotational slip is)
An arete forms when 2 carries erode back to back
Explain the formation of a pyramidal peak
Ice gathers on the less sunny north and east-facing slopes, it compacts and turns into ice. This is known as neve. it moves downhill due to gravity
Plucking (explain what plucking does)
Abrasion (explain what abrasion does)
Rotational slip (explain what rotational slip is)
A pyramidal peak forms when 3 or more carries erode back to back
Freeze-thaw keeps the tip of the peak jagged (explain what freeze-thaw is)
