glaciation Flashcards

Q

what is plucking?

A

plucking is when ice freezes onto a rock and as the ice moves it pulls the rock along with it. This makes the hollow steeper. This know as the tweezer effect.

Q

what is abrasion?

A

Abrasion is when when rocks in the ice scrape and erode the bedrock which makes the hollow steeper.

Q

what is freeze thaw weathering?

A

freeze thaw weathering is when melted snow enters the cracks and crevices of a rock, when temperatures drop at night the water freezes into ice, water expand when frozen so after several occurrences the rock breaks apart

Q

explain the formation of a corrie

A

-snow collects in a north facing hollow of a mountain and it compacts to form ice

  • ice begins to move downhill due to gravity and the hollow is eroded

-rocks frozen onto the bottom of the ice scapes away at the base of the hollow, making is deeper, this is called abrasion

-ice plucking is when the glacier freezes onto loosened rocks and pulls it as the glacier moves making it steeper

-freeze thaw weathering causes rocks to shatter as water enter cracks in the
rocks it freezes, the crack expand, after several occurrences the rocks breaks apart

-a rock lip is formed at the edge of a corrie where the material has been deposited

  • once the ice melts it may leave a corrie loch

what is the formation of an arête?

A

-snow collects in the north facing hollow of a mountain

-the ice moves downhill due to gravity and the hollow is eroded

-rocks freeze onto the bottom of the ice and scrape away at the base of the hollow making it deeper, this is called abrasion

-plucking is when ice freezes onto rocks and when the ice moves it pulls the loosened rock along with it

-freeze thaw weathering is when water enters the cracks of a rock. Once the water freezes it expands causing the crack to also expand. after several occurrences the rock shatters

  • a rock lip is found at the edge of a corrie where the material has been deposited
  • the ice melts and can leave a corrie loch
    • an arête is when two corries form back to back

what is the formation of a pyramidal peak?

  • a rock lip is found at the edge of a corrie where the material has been deposited
  • the ice melts and can leave a corrie loch
    • a pyramidal peak is when three or more carries form back to back creating a sharp peak

Q

what is the formation of a u- shaped valley ?

A

-Snow compresses into ice and forms a glacier which flow downhill due to gravity down an old v-shaped valley.

-The glacier uses the process plucking to steepen the sides of a valley. Plucking is when ice freezes onto rocks and when the ice moves away the rock is the pulled along with it.

-abrasion happens when rocks frozen to the bottom of a glacier scrape and erode the valley floor

-As the glacier flows it erodes the sides of the valley. Abrasion causes the valley to widen and deepen.

freeze that weathering is when water enters the cracks and crevices of a rock and once it freezes it expands and so does the crack. after several occurrences the rock would shatter which helps erode the valley side

  • once the ice has melted a misfit stream is left behind

Q

for a named area you have studies explain ways in which two different land uses would be in conflict with each other?

A
  • tourists could trample crops and reduce crop yield, costing the farmer money

-tourists can walk on paths and cause footpath erosion which damages farmland and takes time to repair

-gates can be left open, allowing cattle to escape costing the farmer money to replace the animal

dogs can chase sheep if left of leads, this can worry pregnant sheep causing them to miscarry which costs the farmer money

-stone walls and fences could be damaged by tourists climbing over them costing the farmer time to repair them

-small country lanes could be blocked by parking on verges stopping the farmers from getting large machinery past

-farmers can slow traffic with large machinery costing the tourists time

-large machinery being used early in the morning can disturb tourist’s sleep

Q

for a name area you have studies, explain how conflict between two different land uses may be managed

A

For the cairngorms

  • busy paths have been surfaced with chips to prevent further erosion
  • Put signs near farm field warning people to keep dogs on leads

-and advertising campaign encouraging people to take their litter home will prevent littering and overflowing bins

-farmers have ‘keep gate closed’ signs displayed

-public transport and cycling has been promoted to reduce congestion

  • designated parking has been set up to keep cars if the street
