glaciated landscape oil in Alaska Flashcards
1
Q
the need for oil
A
- in 2019 the USA consumed am average of 19,000 barrels of oil per day.
2
Q
reserves
A
- its estimated that area 1002 in the artic national wildlife refuge contains over 12 billion barrels, of which 6 billion could bee extarcted using currently available technology.
3
Q
impact on the periglacial landscape system
A
- one way in which material flows are affected is through the use of gravel pads, gravel is extracted from stream and river beds and used as an insulating base layer for road construciton, the loss of gravel from the river systems alters the rate at which gravel is transported and deposited downstream.
- energy flows are effected in two ways, by the release and burning of gas during drilling some gases are burnt in a process called flaring which releases mainly co2 into the atmosphere. the other way is though the production of heart from red extraction and transportation processes as well as from the associated infrustrture.
4
Q
changing landforms
A
- the heat released of buildings can infrastructure can lead to the thawing of permafrost and a longer period of melting of the active layer
- if the building itself is constructed directly onto the ground surface some of the heat produced by heating systems may be transferred through the floor to the ground melting the permafrost.
