Glacial Landscapes Flashcards
glacial erosion
Glaciers erode the landscape as they move
By plucking and abrasion
Glacial landforms
Arête- knife edge found at back of two curries
Pyramidal peak – three Currys backing into each other
Curries- Hollow in Valleyside, steep side, jagged summit, straight back wall, rock lip
Ribbon lake – long and thin as hard rock on outside of soft rock which collects inwards, severe erosion
Glacial troughs – u shaped - Start off as the shakes river valley but Glacier erodes making it deeper and wider
Hanging valley – formed by smaller glaciers, glacial troughs eroded so Valley left at high-level
Truncated spurs – clifflike edges, formed when ridges of land that stick out into main valley are cut off as glazier moves past
Glaziers transport and deposit material called
Till
Glacial the position
Glaziers deposit material as different types of moraine
Median – middle
Lateral – widest point at sides
Terminal– Snout (end) of glazier
Ground – Deposited over a wide area of the valley floor
Material also deposited as drumlins and erattics
Land use in glacial landscapes
Farming Forestry Quarrying Tourism Causes conflict - destruction to habitats, walking scares of animals
Tourism in glacial landscapes
Economic Impacts – Offers employment, high house prices
Social Impacts – increased traffic, Services Ltd for local residents
Environmental impacts – footpath erosion, litter, watersports creates noise pollution, wildlife disturbed
Strategies to cope with tourism
Managing footpath erosion
Managing traffic congestion
Protecting wildlife and farmland
Tourism in glacial landscapes case study
Lake District
Environmental impacts – noise erosion and pollution
Economic impacts – tourism increases jobs, prices of houses increase
Social impact – traffic, every day Goods are high due to tourism
