Glacial landforms part 2 Flashcards
What is an esker?
sinious ridges made of sands and gravels, deposited by glacial meltwater flowing through tunnels within and underneath glaciers
How are eskers formed?
1- subglacial stream forms due to increase pressure
2- channel carries sediment
3- when the glacier retreats the stream stops flowing
4- it then deposits all its material because it doesn’t have the energy
5- it gets dumped in a long line where the channel was
What is a kame?
a deposited mound of sediment left in the path of a retreating glacier
How are kames formed?
rocks from the valley fall onto the glacier, the rocks move down closer to the base of the glacier. Eventually, they are dumped onto the bed as a mound of sediment
What is a kame terrace?
A deposited mound of sediment at the sides of the valley
How are kame terrace formed?
forms due to differential specific heat capacity of valley and glacier, leading to supra-glacial streams which deposit material along the valley side
What is a kame delta?
Kames that form in a proglacial lake
How are kame deltas formed?
1- Subglacial channel is formed from pressure
2- it transports material downstream
3- it then looses energy and deposits the sediment
