Features part 3 Flashcards
What is an arête?
Knife ridge between 2 corries
When are arêtes formed?
When two neighbouring corries run back to back. As glacier eroded either side of ridge, the edge becomes steeper
What is a trough?
Also known at a U shaped valley, it’s a straight flat-bottomed steep sided valley
How are glacial troughs formed?
Glaciers flow down existing river valleys via basal sliding under gravity and eroded the sides and floor cause the shape to become deeper and straighter
What landforms are predominantly influenced by erosion?
-corrie
-arêtes
-pyramidal peaks
-through
-roche moutonee
-striations
Corrie step by step:
Nivation, plucking, abrasion, deposition, freeze thaw
How are roche mountonee formed?
Hard rock on one side and rock has been eroded on the other side, so abrasion happens (striations) on eroded side and plucking on the steep side
What is scree?
loose rock
