Glacial Erosional Landforms Flashcards
What is a corrie
An armchair-shaped rock basin with a rock lip that is cut out into a mountain, usually on the north and east facing slopes
How is a corrie formed
Snow collects in a hollow created by freeze-thaw weathering, plucking and abrasion and deepens the depression in he side of the mountain
What is an arete
A steep knife-edged ridge formed by two corries
How is an arete formed
plucking and abrasion cause backward erosion of the corries creating the steep ridge
What is a bergschrund
A crevasse that forms where a glacier separates from the back wall of a corrie
What is a pyramidal peak
A sharply pointed mountain peak
How is a pyramidal peak formed
Formed when three or more corries meet
What is a U-shaped valley / glacial trough
A straight, wide and steep valley-sided valley
How is a U-shaped valley / glacial trough formed
formed by a glacier bulldozing and eroding through a river valley
What is a truncated spur
A spur that has been eroded away by a glacier
How is a truncated spur formed
Glacial erosion removes areas of land protruding from the river valley sides
What is a ribbon lake
How is ribbon lake formed
What is a hanging valley
How is a hanging valley formed
