What is Portal Hypertension?
2 common causes?
Clinical features (2)?
A
Portal hypertension = Pathological increase in the blood pressure of the portal venous system
Common causes:
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- Obstruction of the portal vein due to a tumour or thrombus
Clinical Signs and Symptoms
– Oesophageal Varices = Dilated oesophageal veins that may cause life-threatening bleeding
– Dilated epigastric veins aka ‘caput medusae’
