GIT Pathology Flashcards
Periodontal Disease
Caused by dental plaque damaging enamel and gingival tissue
Results in bacteria, difficulty eating and halitosis
Sequela vegetative valvular endocarditis
Malocclusion
Can be overshot or undershot (developmental defect)
Can result in difficulty apprehending food
Palatochisis and Cheilochisis
Palate and lip have failed to fuse
Possible sequela = aspiration pneumonia
Vesicular Stomatitides
Caused by viral diseases such as foot and mouth
resulting is vesicles, blisters and ulcers
Erosive and Ulcerative Stomatitides
Caused by Rinderpest, Catarrhal fever, Bluetonuge, BDVD and Calicivrus
Necrotizing Stomatitides
Caused by infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum
Granulomatous glossitis
Wooden tongue - Actinobacillus lignieresii
Inflammation and fibrosis
Lymphoplasmacytic stomatitis
Cats
Red inflammed gums, bad breath and inappetence
Sequela = persistent bacterial infection
Achalasia
Motility disorder causing difficult swallowing and regurgitation
Megaesophagus
Innervation or denervation disorder, partial obstruction, stenosis or idiopathic
Insufficent, absent or uncoordinated peristalsis in the oesophagus causing dilation
Parasites
Spirocera lupi - migrate from the stomach to the oesophageal submucosa and then haemtogenously into the aorta causing granulomas
Can result in dysphagia, aortic aneurysms, haemothroax, fibrosarcoma and osteosarcomas
Choke
Oesophageal obstruction due to stenosis or blockage, causes pressure necrosis, stricture, reflex regurgitation or aspiration pneumonia
Bloat/tympany - overdistention
Primary - legumes/dietary/frothy bloat
Secondary - physical = cancers and foreign bodies or function = vagus indigestion
Rumenitis - Lactic Acidosis
Ruminants on high grain diets as they promote the growth of Strep and Lactobacillus
Low pH eliminate normal ruminant flora - damaging mucosa
Gastric Dilation and Volvulus
Repeated episodes of dilation lead to stretching and relaxation of gastrohepatic ligament
Predisposing factors in deep-chested dogs = overfeeding, genetics, post-prandial excrete and recurrent dilations
