Characteristics of ulcerative colitis and drug to treat it

- Inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the colon, form of IBD
- Causes a thin wall and mucosa pseudo polyps
- Can be treated with Mesalamine – anti inflammatory effect on epithelial cells

Characteristics of crohns disease
A
- Inflammatory disease affecting whole GIT, form of IBD
- Causes cobble stoning and thick wall

Describe the process of colon cancer forming
A
Starts out as benign bowel polyps
- Stage 0, abnormal cells found in mucosa of colon
- Stage 1, cancee has formed in mucosa and spread to the submucosa
- Stage 2a, spreads to serosa (outer layer), Stage 2b, spread to tissue that lines organs, Stage 2c, spread to nearby organs
- Stage 3a, spread to nearby lymph nodes, stage 3b, spread to many lymph nodes
- Stage 4, spread to other parts of the body
