GIS/GPS/Maps Flashcards
projection
the process in which the 3D earth is converted to a 2D map
Orthographic
gives the illusion of a 3D globe.
mercator
all lines of latitude are the same length and distances apart increase away from the equator
uninterrupted sinusoidal
top shaped
Coordinate system
a method for describing the location of a point on the earth
latitude
horazontal lines increaseing buy 15 degrees away from the equator
Longitude
virtical lines going east to west of the prime meridian by 15 degrees
Public Land Survey System (PLSS)
a grid based on principal meridians (N-S lines) and base lines (E-W lines) that form 6mi by 6mi squares
townships
E-W rows
Ranges
N-S columns
Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)
grid divides earth into 1200 segments, each containing 6 degrees of logitutde and 8 of latitude
letters are E-W rows
UTM zones are N-S columns
Topographic maps
use contour lines to show landforms
Aerial photos
photos taken from a plane and peiced together
Landsat images
made by satllite using other light wavelengths (es)
Digital elevation modles (DEM)
computer generated 3D views of landforms made from radar satelite elevation readings
