Socialism grew because of a greater mixing of Italians that led to increased literacy, education, and an awareness of political engagement.

They would take their message to the poor by holding debates and discussions in café’s and bars, which promoted education as a means of political challenge. As opposed to how the liberal politicians who would rarely have contact with the lower classes.

Because of the socialist Split. The reformist Socialists were willing to work with Giolitti, while the maximalists weren’t.

Maximalists believed in revolutionary change and a violent overthrow of the government.
