what successes came out of the Libyan war?
national enthusiasm - seen as a victory which overcame the shame of the Battle of Adwa (1896), and showed Italy to be a great power
what were the failures of the Libyan war for G? (5 points)
- The war increased support for the ANI and accentuated their opposition to the Liberal government because they believed not enough was done to ensure Italian victory.
- It encouraged nationalists to demand further expansion.
- Nationalists continued to refuse to work with G
- Giolitti lost socialist support as they were anti-war. The PSI had helped form the key basis for his programme of trasformismo - this was now lost.
- Encouraged Giolitti to extend the franchise, as it was difficult to deny the vote to Italy’s conscript soldiers. This led to further political problems for the Liberals.

what was the franchise extension?
1912 extended vote to all military service men and all men over 30 regardless of literacy

undermine the PSI
increase popularity of liberals

1913 liberals lost 71 seats
Socialists, nationalist, radicals and the Catholic Church all made gains in their vote
