  • By 1900 1/2 AA’s could read c.w. 1/25 1865

  • New jobs in Indian Agency offices, scout for army/translator
  • Battle of Little Bighorn 1876 changed some white American attitudes - change in approach
  • Navajo tribe grown their flock of 15,000 sheep by 1892 had reached 1.7 million
  • Dawes Act 1887 - Male NA’s became landowners
  • Reservations helped to preserve Native American culture and tribal life

  • Women made 35% of the workforce
  • Average annual wage - $380 –> $560
  • KOL Wabash Railroad 1886 - focused & secured improvements
  • Wages rose dramatically- some skilled seeing 60% wage rise
