Name some of the tests states introduced to prevent African Americans from voting

A

Grandfather clause-If your grandfather had the right to vote before 1867 (when AA gained the vote) then you did not need to take a literacy test
Literacy test- voters had to take a literacy tests- most AA did not have any education
Poll tax- voters had to pay $2 to vote- AA were amongst the poorest demographic in America

What were Marcus Garvey’s aims in his activism?

A

Garvey wanted to increase black consciousness- make black people proud of their skin colour
Wanted the economic advancement of African Americans- Black Star Line and factories which employed over 1000 AA and produced black products

A

Garvey was seen to be radical for the time period, especially his aim of migrating African Americans to Africa
Only focused on economic progression of AA
Arrest meant that he did not achieve his full potential

A

Washington set up his education institute, the Tuskegee institute
Atlanta speech in 1895 presented the idea of accommodationism- an attempt for black people to negotiate with white dominated south
