Prevalence- Federal estimate and why it’s hard to estimate
Federal: 3-5% entire student population
characteristics- “positive” and “negative”
Positive: advanced memory skills, a “rage to master”, precocious, keen observation, strong abstract thinking, highly developed sense of moral judgement
Negative: can be highly sensitive, underachievement in uninteresting areas, high rates of drop out, “disrespect” of questioning of authority, can dominate discussions, curiosity can seem aggressive or nosy
How is giftedness determined or identified?
Iq tests, students performance achievement or state tests, portfolios/work products, interviews/nominations (teacher, parent, self, peer) involvement in extracurricular
Under-identification of who?
- students with disabilities - “twice exceptional”
- African American, Hispanic, Native American students
- Children from rural areas
- Under-achievers
-Girls
Educating these students:
federal level: special services for G+T students are not required under IDEA, but are encouraged by federal legislation
State level: Some states have mandatory programs
District/ school level: Many schools develop programs for children who are gifted
What are the 4 types of programs/placements?
- Regular, whole group, general education
- Tacking or ability grouping approaches
- Resource room or pull out
- cluster grouping
What is acceleration and enrichment (know what these are and examples)
-Provides students with opportunities to move through required curriculum at a faster pace
- Most relevant for high academic ability students
Ex:
-Curriculum compacting
-Early admission at school or college
-Grade skipping
- testing out of classes
