American academy of pediatrics recommends:
-Behavioral interventions first for young kids
-medication in combination with behavioral interventions for adolescents
* Medication can help with short-term improvement but a combination of behavioral/ educational interventions and medications is best for long-term success
Medication
-Use of medication has increased dramatically (65-75% of children respond to medication
Stimulant medications- Ritalin, adderal, concerta
Non-stimulant medications- strattera
medication side effects- stimulants- poor appetite, weight loss, headaches, sleep problems, irritability, “rebound” effect once off medication.
Causes- what do we currently know?
