Q

Alternative evidence:

A

Schwartz (1973) placed infants directly on shallow or deep and measured their heart rate found that 5 month old showed no change in heart rate whereas 9 month old did which contradicts g and w as it suggests that it’s not innate
Bower (1970) found that infants as young as 6 days as they were shown a video of a disc flying towards them they cried they could tell it was approaching them it supports g and w as it seems innate
Sorce (1985) did the same cliff used parent prompts either fear face or happy face they crossed on the happy fave ect this develops g and w a it shows that although it’s innate we still learn from our environments ( mum) whether it’s safe

Q

Methodology:

A

High levels of controls etc
Demand characteristics as the mothers were present could be cues
It’s replicable due to standardised procedure repeated many times with animals also
Less valid as older infants had been mobile for a while
Lacks Eco validity as set up was artificial argued that for babies and kittens it was like stairs in a house
Unrepresentative sample as all the babies were children of scientists at the uni (especially clever)
ethical issues babies crying and kittens in the dark (protection from harm)
