Gibberellin 5.5.5 Flashcards
What are gibberellins?
Group of hormones that help plants grow by stimulating cell division and elongation in the stem
Why have award plant varieties been shown to have low levels of gibberellin?
Often due to a mutation in a gene involved in the synthesis of gibberellins
Why do some farmers apply gibberellins to short plants?
To promote growth
What happens when water is absorbed by the seed?
Gibberellins are released - resulting in germination
Give experimental evidence for gibberellins?
Seeds of mutant varieties that do not produce gibberellins can be induced to germinate if gibberellins are applied.
Seeds that require light to germinate can be made to germinate in the dark if gibberellins are applied
