GI: Virulence Factors Flashcards
the etiological agents of dental caries have what key virulence factors?
s. mutans, s. sobrinus m/c (& lactobacillus, actinomyces, bidifobacterium)
- adhesins
- acidogeneticity
- aciduricity
- synthesis of EPS (extracellular polymers)
- production of intracellular polysaccharides
how do adhesins contribute to he virulence of dental caries agent?
they allow initial binding to the surface of the tooth
how does acidogenicity contribute to the virulence of dental caries agents?
enables the agents to convert the surrouding sucrose / other carbohydrates (from the food we eat) into lactic acid via fermentation
how does aciduriticy contribute to the virulence of dental caries agents?
enables the agents to survive & grow in the acidic environment they are generate when they ferment sucrose
how does synthesis of EPS contribute to the virulence of dental caries agents?
EPS (extracellular polymers) allow the agents to consolidate attachment of plaque to the tooth
how does production of intracellular polysaccharides contribute to the virulence of dental caries agents?
enables the agents to convert any excess sucrose / other carbohydrates into a storage form that can be utilized for fuel during a time when carbohydrates are not available
