GI System Overview (Test 2) Flashcards
What are healthy GI system functions?
Ingestion, digestion, and absorption of nutrients; elimination of wastes; major role in the immune system
How can you keep your GI system healthy?
Fiber, probiotics, hydration
How can you get fiber besides food?
Fiber supplements, Maggie says they are very helpful
Where can you get probiotics?
Yogurt or anything that’s fermented (sauerkraut, pickled things, etc.)
What can fiber reduce and what can it prevent?
It can reduce your cholesterol and prevent bowel/colon cancer
What can keep the immune system strong?
Rest, nutrition, exercise, mental attitude/stree
To keep your GI system healthy what should you avoid?
Tobacco of all forms, excessive alcohol use, excessive caffeine, overeating, exposure to toxic chemicals
What can excessive caffeine due to the GI system?
Can cause indigestion and GERD
What happens when you overeat?
It pushes all the food up and it causes heartburn feelings and stuff
How to keep the system moving?
Elimination of waste, control of cholesterol, “healthy” GI function at least once a day, fiber, activity, hydration, maintenance of beneficial bacteria base
What do alterations in one part of the GI system do?
Can cause alterations in another part of the system (ex: If you’re constipated you lose your appetite, etc.)
What 2 aspects make up one continuous system?
GI tract and accessory organs
Common categories of alterations?
Irritation/inflammation, infection, underactive (hypoactive), overactive (hyperactive), malformation, trauma, or structural changes, and autoimmune
What is appendicitis?
???
What is an example of an acute GI condition?
Appendicitis
What is a chronic GI condition?
Either it is ongoing (present all the time), or exacerbation (acute episode of chronic condition)
What is an acute GI condition?
One time incidence
How do you reset the system in the case of irritation/inflammation?
NPO, nasogastric tube low suction, bland/BRAT diet
What are examples of irritation/inflammation conditions?
Gastritis, pancreatitis
What problems can you anticipate that go along with being NPO, NG tubes, bland diet, etc.
???
How can you protect your system in the case of irritation/inflammation conditions?
Lifestyle changes, meds, diet
How can you buy time for the system to heal from irritation/inflammation?
Rest (NPO)
How can you treat a GI infection?
Antibiotics
What causes peptic ulcers?
H. pylori infections
What does diverticulitis require?
Antibiotics
If the GI system is hypoactive, what should you do? How?
Stimulate peristalsis with fiber and medications (bowel stimulants)
What are examples of bowel stimulants? *You need to make a list!!! :)
Reglan, fiber, magnesium, sugar, etc.???????
What do pain meds and narcotics do to the GI system?
Slows down peristalsis
What is gastroschisis? What kind of disease is it?
When organs are born outside of the body. It is hereditary.
What interventions should be done for small or large bowel blockages?
Decompress (NG tube to low suction), rest (NPO), hydration (IV fluids), time (4-6 days or so)
What should be done for a hyperactive GI system?
Slow down peristalsis with fiber (?) and medications (which meds besides Imodium??)
What meds slow down peristalsis?
Imodium and???
What are examples of malformation or structural changes?
Pyloric stenosis, inperforate anus, gastroschisis, hiatal hernia, GERD (what 3 of these are infant diseases???)
*Look up…
All of slide 33’s diseases!!! :)
What is GERD r/t?
Impaired lower esophageal sphincter
People with GI bleeds receive what kind of IV drips?
Protonix and Sandostatin
What medications actions have to do with GI medication categories? (Confusing??)
Decrease stomach acid, protect from stomach acid, neutralize stomach acid; treat infections (antibiotics and anti-infectives); stimulate peristalsis (Reglan, fiber, magnesium, sugar, etc.); slow peristalsis (Imodium, etc.)
