You should be able to recognise these key histological features they will commonly bring up in the exam in association with certain conditions, as below:
Jejunal biopsy:
Increased intraepithelial lymphocytes with villous atrophy and crypt hyperplasia and lamina propria infiltration with lymphocytes
= Coeliac disease
Deposition of macrophages containing PAS-positive granules within villi
= Whipple’s disease
Transmural inflammation with multiple lymphoid aggregates
= Crohn’s disease
Gastric Biopsy:
‘Roughened area’ - Large number of lymphocytes that have irregular nuclear contours with abundant cytoplasm
= Gastric MALT Lymphoma
