How long do PPIs take to work, and for the pt to recover afterwards?
2-3 days for achlorhydria for healing ulcers
2-3 days after stopping drugs
Name an antacid
Aluminium hydroxide
Name a compound alginate
Alginic acid (Gaviscon)
What is the MoA of alginic acid?
Combines with bicarbonate to make a barrier over the gastric acid to stop it from refluxing
What is the MoA of antacids?
Reacts with the HCl to make a salt and water, therefore reducing the amount of acid in the stomach and increasing the pH
What is the treatment pathway for GORD?
- Lifestyle e.g. avoid late meals, alcohol and chocolate, lose weight
- Antacids/ alginates
- H2RAs
- PPIs
How do you treat H-pylori?
2 antibiotics and a PPI
Clarithromycin, amoxicillin, lansoprazole
