What are you checking for when examining the abdomen specifically ?
Scars Asymmetry Distension Dilated veins Visible peristalsis
How should the person be positioned in a GI exam ?
Exposed from costal margin to the groin - hands by their side
What should be palpated ?
9 areas lightly then deeply
At the level of the patient
Ask if any pain
Rebound tenderness if indicated
Liver - deep breath in and out, right iliac fossa and upwards
Spleen - right iliac fossa move diagonally upwards towards the left hypochondrium
Kidney - place hand under left loin and roll, blot the kidney

What should you auscultate ?
9 areas start in right iliac fossa
How would you complete the exam ?
Hernial orifices
External genitalia
DRE
