GI Dz Flashcards
What are some things you can recommend to owners to eliminate dietary indiscretion?
(Not leaving food on counters/tables, distracting with food puzzles while humans eat, basket muzzles/other mouth blocking items for walks)
When does bilious vomiting typically occur?
(In the morning before breakfast)
If an owner describes to you bilious vomiting and the pet has no other issues (lethargy, weight loss, diarrhea, etc.), what should you recommend first?
(Feeding smaller more frequent meals)
What is the purpose of highly digestible diets (often used for treatment of acute diarrhea)?
(They provide more nutrients by being more easily absorbed and provide less nutrients for the microbes to ferment in the large intestines)
Enhancing dietary fiber is indicated when there is increased/decreased (choose) stool frequency, straining, and mucus.
(Increased)
What are some over the counter options for fiber supplementation?
(Psyllium, oligosaccharide “prebiotics” (fructooligosaccharides and mannanoligosaccharides), and cellulose)
What is the gold standard for testing for hypoallergenic responsive diarrhea?
(Do a hypoallergenic diet trial then rechallenge the animal to confirm allergy; serum and salivary allergy tests have a high chance of false positives so not reliable)
What is the main dietary change that should occur in patients with EPI?
(Supplementation of digestive enzymes, should also switch to a highly digestible diet and smaller more frequent meals)
