A

Resuscitation, start IV Pantoprazole, Terlipressin (vasopressin analogue) or Octreotide, prophylactic antibiotics (e.g. cipro), OGD

Prophylaxis of variceal haemorrhage?

A

Propranolol: reduced rebleeding.

  • Endoscopic variceal band ligation (EVL): performed every 2 wks until all varices eradicated + PPI cover

What is TIPSS?

A

Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt: connects hepatic vein to portal vein.
-> to reduce portal HTN.

Exacerbation of hepatic encephalopathy is a common complication
