GI Flashcards
Define 3 way abdominal x-ray series
when is it indicated?
- AP projection while pt SUPINE (aka KUB)
- UPRIGHT - better visualization of air fluid levels
- PA CRX - visualize free air underneath hemidiaphragms and check chest pathology
indicated for suspected:
-obstruction, perforation, intussusception
Radiolucent vs radiopaque
radiolucent- dark areas on xray, permit penetration of xray e.g. air
radiopaque - lighter areas on xray - areas that block penetration of xrays e.g. bone, organ tissue
Define UGI series
upper gastrointestianal series
pt drinks barium sulfate contrast & fluoroscopy used to visualize

dysphagia
dyspepsia
odynophagia

dyspepsia- uncomfortable digestion “gerd” sxs
odynophagia - painful swallowing

water soluable Gastrografin
When getting an UGI series + concern for perforation, you would NOT use barium- instead you would use what?
water soluable Gastrografin
however for suspected GI perforation - 1st line is CT scan (instead of UGI) ** also use water soluable Gastrografin NOT barium
