Define 3 way abdominal x-ray series

when is it indicated?

A

3 views

  1. AP projection while pt SUPINE (aka KUB)
  2. UPRIGHT - better visualization of air fluid levels
  3. PA CRX - visualize free air underneath hemidiaphragms and check chest pathology

indicated for suspected:
-obstruction, perforation, intussusception

Radiolucent vs radiopaque

A

radiolucent- dark areas on xray, permit penetration of xray e.g. air

radiopaque - lighter areas on xray - areas that block penetration of xrays e.g. bone, organ tissue

Define UGI series

A

upper gastrointestianal series

pt drinks barium sulfate contrast & fluoroscopy used to visualize
1. esophagus 2. stomach 3. 1st part of duodenum

UGI consists of parts:

  1. fluoroscopy
  2. esophagram aka barium swallow
  3. small bowel follow-through

dysphagia- difficulty in swallowing

dyspepsia- uncomfortable digestion “gerd” sxs

odynophagia - painful swallowing

When getting an UGI series + concern for perforation, you would NOT use barium- instead you would use what?

A

water soluable Gastrografin

however for suspected GI perforation - 1st line is CT scan (instead of UGI) ** also use water soluable Gastrografin NOT barium
