GI Flashcards
Layers of the Alimentary canal
- ) Mucosa (epithelium, lamina propria, muscularis mucosae)
- ) Submucosa
- ) Muscularis externa
- ) Serosa/Adventitia
Epithelial lining of the oral cavity
stratified squamous
Epithelial lining of the esophagus
stratified squamous
Epithelial lining of the stomach
simple columnar
Epithelial lining of the intestine
simple columnar
describe the muscularis mucosae (general alimentary canal)
composed of SMOOTH muscle only
location of Meissner’s Plexus
Submucosa
Location of Auerbach’s plexus
between the longitudinal and circular layers of the muscularis externa
Serosa vs Adventitia
Serosa is within the peritoneal cavity - simple squamous epithelium
Adventitia- OUTSIDE the peritoneal cavity- whispy fibers that blend into connective tissue of the surrounding structures
Muscularis externa of the alimentary canal
two layers (inner circular and outer longitudinal)
smooth muscle in most of the canal (skeletal muscle in upper esophagus -mixed in middle esophagus)
Layers of the Oral cavity
Epithelium
Lamina Propria
Submucosa
What layers are absent in the oral cavity
No muscularis mucosae
No Muscularis externa
No serosa/adventitia
Describe the submucosa of the oral cavity
Not clearly separated from . lamina propria (look where the glands are)
Minor salivary glands located here
Minor salivary glands of the oral cavity
Intrinsic (located within the wall of the oral cavity)
Mucous secreting (watery- not very many enzymes)
Branched tubular glands
Surface of the tongue
covered with stratified squamous epithelium (often straified on the dorsal side)
