GI 2 Flashcards
What is the Schilling Test for B12?
- To detect pernicious anemia (autoimmune destruction of intrinsic factor)
What results can you get from Schilling Test?
- Pernicious anemia
- Intestinal malabsorption
- Hypothyroidism
- Liver disease
What is Meckel’s Diverticulum?
a true diverticulum of the ileum containing all 3 layers of the bowel wall.
(mucosa, submucosa, musclaris propria)
What is present in 50% of patients with Meckel’s Diverticulum?
Heteroropic tissue (gastric mucosa & pancreatic tissue)
In all imaging modalities, findings of Meckel diverticulum are ______
Nonspecific
Meckel diverticula are diagnosed when?
during surgery or autopsy, with imaging playing a secondary role
What is more sensitive for Meckel’s Diverticulum?
Scintigraphy
When can you see jaundice in sclera?
When it is about 2 mg/dL
What ratio of AST / ALT suggests alcoholic or non-alcoholic?
- more than 2 suggests alcoholic liver disease
- less than 1.0 suggests non-alcoholic liver disease.
What do elevated AST & ALT liver enzymes mean?
leakage from damaged cells
Levels >1000 IU/L suggest what?
- Drug-induced hepatitis
- Acute viral hepatitis (A or B)
- Ischemic or autoimmune hepatitis.
What is GGT?
Raised GGT in patients with chronic liver disease is associated with bile duct damage and fibrosis
What is alkaline phosphate?
ALP comes mainly from the cells lining bile ducts but is also in bone
If the GGT concentration is normal, a high ALP result suggests what?
bone disease
What is SAAG?
Serum ascites albumin gradient. Use it to diagnose assets due to portal HTN
SAAG = serum albumin = ascitic fluid albumin
