Dickens conceals the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come’s features to symbolise the unknowable nature of the future, reinforcing its role as a mysterious and ominous force. This ominous nature of the ghost is reinforced through the word “shrouded” which carries connotations of death and mourning, creating an ambience of foreboding and finality, a reminder of the consequences of Scrooge’s past immoralities if he does not repent

The phrase “solemn dread” highlights the impact the ghost has on Scrooge without even speaking or moving demonstrating the Ghost as powerful force over Scrooge. Powerful nature could show the future is powerful as it is the part that Scrooge can change.

The ghost is an ominous powerful figure that has significantly impacted Scrooge that he causes him to expose his fears not just emotionally but invoke a physical reaction out of him. The use of sibilance, “silent shape” reiterate the unsettling nature of the ghost reminding them he is a part of the supernatural.

Although the ghost wants to invoke fear into Scrooge the Ghost gives him “time to recover” reminding the reader that the Ghost is here for Scrooge’s benefit and is committed to guide him. Supernatural could be symbolic of a higher power (God) demonstrating there are parts of religion we fear but in the end it is for our benefit.??

This is an declaration from Scrooge demonstrating he is going to embody the teachings of the ghost of future and therefore the other Ghosts suggesting that The Ghost have been successful in their mission of reforming Scrooge demonstrating their powerful nature whilst reuttering how Scrooge’s transformation could not occur without them.
