Getting Metals From Rocks Flashcards
What is a metal ore?
A rock which contains enough metal worthwile for extracting the metal from it.
How can metals be extracted from their ores?
Chemically - reduction/electrolysis.
What can electrolysis also be used for?
To purify the extracted metal.
Some metals can be extracted by reduction with what?
Carbon.
What is removed when an ore is reduced?
Oxygen.
Which metals are extracted using electrolysis?
Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, and Aluminium.
Which metals are extracted by reduction?
Carbon, Zinc, Iron, Tin, and Copper.
How is copper purified?
By electrolysis.
What is smelting?
When an ore is heated in a furnace.
What does electrolysis mean?
Splitting up with electricity.
What is an electrolyte?
The liquid used to conduct electricity in electrolysis.
What do electrolytes have?
Free ions.
Anode?
Positive, electrons taken away.
Cathode?
Negative, electrons given away.
What is bioleaching?
Using bacteria to separate copper from copper sulphide.
