Cracking Crude Oil Flashcards
1
Q
What does cracking mean?
A
Splitting up long chains of hydrocarbons.
2
Q
What do long chain hydrocarbons form?
A
Thick gloopy liquids like tar.
3
Q
What type of reaction is cracking?
A
Thermal Decomposition.
4
Q
What is the happens during cracking?
A
Heat the long chain hydrocarbon to vaporise it - vapour passed over a powdered catalyst (aluminium oxide) - molecules split.
5
Q
What are the products of cracking?
A
Alkanes mainly, unsaturated hydrocarbons are alkenes.
