Getting Metals Flashcards
1
Q
Which metals are extracted using electrolysis
A
Potassium Sodium Calcium Magnesium
Aluminium
2
Q
Which metals are extracted by reduction using Carbon
A
- Zinc
- Iron
- Tin
- Copper
3
Q
How to get copper from electrolysis
A
- Electrons are pulled off copper atoms and the anode (+ve) causing them to go into solution as Cu2+ ions.
- Cu2+ ions near the cathode gain electrons and turn back copper atoms
- The impurities are dropped at the anode as sludge, whilst pure copper atoms bonds to the cathode (-ve)
4
Q
Anode (+ve)
A
A lump of impure copper which will dissolve
5
Q
Cathode (-ve)
A
Starts as a thin piece of copper and more pure copper adds to it
6
Q
Electrolysis
A
- Breaking down of a substance using electricity
- A liquid conducts the electricity (electrolyte)
- Electrolytes are metal salt solutions (e.g copper sulphate )
- The electrolyte has free ions (conduct electricity makes it work)
- Electrons are taken away by the +ve and given away by the -ve
7
Q
O I L
A
Oxidation
Is
Loss of electrons
8
Q
R I G
A
Reduction
Is
Gain of electrons
9
Q
Bioleaching
A
- Uses bacteria to seperate copper from copper sulphide
- The bacteria get energy from the bond between copper and sulfur, separating out the copper from the ore on the process
- The leachate contains copper, which can be extracted
10
Q
Phytomining
A
- Growing plants in soil that contains copper
- The plants can’t use or get rid of the copper so it gradually builds up in the leaves
- The plants can be harvested, dried and burned in s furnace
- The copper can be collected from the ash left in the furnace
11
Q
Metal ore
A
A rock which contains enough metal to make it worthwhile extracting the metal from it
