Critical Race Theory =

A
  • Racism is deeply ingrained in society and an ordinary part of everyday
  • The systemic way racism operates in society which is normalised or invisible
  • Race is a social construct to serve particular purposes which is to oppress people
  • Racism is embedded in everyday interactions with people who are seemingly progressive. The characters are not overtly racist disguised by post racial attitudes which reveals how racism is systematic
  • Blackness is viewed as something to be commodified and replaced by white consciousness which shows how race is seen to be manipulated
  • They are able to dehumanise and exploit black bodies for the benefit of others
  • Also it shows how Chris as a Black man in a white, affluent area is disadvantaged. He is seen as a potential vehicle to benefit white characters
  • Get Out exposes the darker realities of systemic oppression which is a counter narrative to the dominant view that often trivialises black experiences
  • They criticise the idea of a post racial society which is the notion that racism does not exist after events such as Obama and the Civil Rights Movement. Get Out critiques this myth showing that racism may appear to be absent however it is still deeply embedded in their actions and society. In a seemingly, racially progressive society, Black people are still objectified, commodified and oppressed
