Gestation Flashcards
Excessive vomiting in pregnancy. It is cause by rapidly increasing serum levels of hormones HCG and estrogen.
HYPEREMESIS GRAVIDARUM
(Weight loss)
Pregnancy outside the uterine cavity. The most frequent site is in the fallopian tube, so rupture of the site usually occurs before 12 weeks. It is commonly caused by mechanical factors that delay the passage of ovum in the oviducts and prevent it from reaching the uterus in time for implantation.
ECTOPIC PREGNANCY
(Vaginal bleeding)
Sudden knife-like pain, most common symptoms when the tube ruptures.
PELVIC PAIN
Abnormal proliferation and degeneration of the trophoblastic villi. Caused by problems in the chromosome.
GESTATIONAL TROPHOBLASTIC DISEASE
(Excessive vomiting)
Cervix that dilates prematurely and therefore cannot hold a fetus until term. (open cervix)
INCOMPETENT CERVIX
(light vaginal bleeding)
Termination of pregnancy before the age of viability.
ABORTUS - a fetus aborted before it is 500 grams in weight.
MACERATION - a dead fetus undergoing necrosis.
ABORTION
(vaginal bleeding)
Defined as 3 or more consecutive 1st trimester abortions. Toni Gonzaga
RECURRENT SPONTANEOUS ABORTION
Bleeding or cramping occurs, but the pregnancy continues.
THREATENED ABORTION
- Bleeding and cramping
- Passage of products of conception has not occurred but considered inevitable.
INEVITABLE ABORTION
- Fetus and placenta are completely expelled.
- Pain ceases
COMPLETE ABORTION
Some, but not all, of the products of conception have passed.
INCOMPLETE ABORTION
The pregnancy has ceased to develop, but the conceptus has not been expelled.
MISSED ABORTION
A problem of pregnancy in which the PLACENTA GROWS IN THE LOWEST PART OF THE WOMB (uterus) and covers all or part of the opening to the cervix.
TYPES
COMPLETE OR TOTAL - a placenta completely covers the internal os when the cervix is fully dilated.
PARTIAL - placenta partially covers the internal os.
MARGINAL - the edge of the placenta is lying at the margin of the internal os
LOW LYING - the placenta implants near the internal os, its edges can be felt by examining finger on the IE.
PLACENTA PREVIA
Spontaneous abortion that is complicated by intrauterine infection, which can occur before, during, or after the abortion.
SEPTIC ABORTION
Premature separation of a normally implanted placenta from the uterine wall, before the birth of the fetus.
ABRUPTIO PLACENTA
Rupture of the membranes (amniotic sac) before labor begins. If PROM occurs before 37 weeks of AOG, it is called preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM).
PREMATURE RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES
Condition in which VASOSPASM occurs during pregnancy in both small and large arteries.
PREGNANCY INDUCED HYPERTENSION
- Blood pressure 140/90 or systolic pressure elevated 15 mmHg above prepregnancy level.
- no edema
GESTATIONAL HYPERTENSION
Disease process acquired only during pregnancy. The cure is delivery of the baby.
PRE-ECLAMPSIA
- Mild edema in the upper extremities or face.
- Weight gain over 2 lbs. per week in 2nd trimester and 1 lb. per week on 3rd trimester.
MILD PRE-ECLAMPSIA
- Blood pressure 160/110 mmHg.
- Cerebral or visual disturbances.
SEVERE PRE-ECLAMPSIA
- Seizure or coma accompanied by s/s or pre-eclampsia.
- Occurs when woman has one or more tonic-clonic seizures.
ECLAMPSIA
