Exercise 1: Aggregate and Disaggregate Orders
Planning further, the demand (previously fixed and known) is now uncertain and fluctuating. De to uncertain demand, it is necessary to store some processors to react to orders that were not forecasted.
The sales department determines the weekly demand for jPhones with an average of 250,000 units and a standard deviation of 12,000 units. The demand is assumed to be normally distributed. The delivery of the processors (needed for production) takes 2 weeks.
Characterize the decision situation. Which model can be used here? List the made assumptions.
Exercise 2: Determining Safety Inventory
Applying the Newsboy-Model, because oft he following characteristics:
- The product „expires“ after the end of the sale period, with no inventory.
- Unsold units can be sold to a recycler for s.
- Demand is not deterministic but stochastic and is given by a (here normally distributed) demand function.
- Ordering and delivery are before the start of the season.
- The manufacturer produces exactly the quantity that was ordered.
- The goal is to determine the optimal order quantity for the next sale period.
