Gesells maturation theory Flashcards
(Development as a result of genetic/inherited factors)
How did Gesell study
-He looked into children’s biological maturation around the 1940s-50s
What was his methodology
Observing large numbers of children to find the skills and abilities that most children had in each age group
Gesells findings
(point 1)
-Identifying norms/milestones for each developments aspect
What are norms/milestones helpful for
They help educators and parents to measure children’s development AND recognise developmental delay
Gesells findings
(point 2)
A child moves through a sequence at their OWN PACE
Gesells findings
(point 3)
Development is PREDETERMINED and environment has little influence
Gesells findings
(point 4)
If a child experiences delayed development then the issue is one of the passing characteristics genetically rather than environment
CRITICISMS OF GESELL
Maturation theory is not helpful in explaining individual/cultural differences OR children without learning difficulties
