Banduras social learning theory (environmental factors) Flashcards
What is Albert Banduras social learning theory based on
Its based on observations of learning occurring through observing the behaviour of others
THE FOUR STAGES OF BEHAVIOURAL LEARNING
Stage 1
The child notices the behaviour of another person - likely to be an older sibling, someone close to them, someone they admire
Stage 2
The child internalises the action by remembering what they have observed
Stage 3
They will reproduce the behaviour when the opportunity occurs
Stage 4
Depending on the outcome (positive/negative reinforcement) children will either repeat the behaviour or desist
Positive reinforcement
The behaviour is repeated because of personal satisfaction or rewards
Negative reinforcement
The behaviour in not repeated to avoid an adverse experience eg: a lack of satisfaction to avoid being told off
THE BOBO DOLL EXPERIMENT
-His theory was based on a famous experiment using a bobo doll
What did his theory demonstrate:
-Children who observed an adult acting aggressively would be likely to act aggressively even when the adult model wasn’t present
-Children would be more likely to IMITATE models of the same sex rather than the opposite sex
-Boys behaved more aggressively than girls
