a syndrome usually of chronic or progressive nature. sees deterioration in cognitive function beyond what is normally expected of ageing

alzheimers dementia pathophysiology - 2 characteristics
reduction in size of cortex
1. plaques - deposits of protein fragment beta amyloid build up in space between nerve cells
2. tangles - twisted fibres of tau protein build up inside cells
pathophysiology of vascular dementia
reduced blood flow to brain which damages and eventually kills brain cells
- narrowing/ blockage of small vessels
- lots of mini strokes
- high blood pressure
dementia with lewy bodies pathophysiology
deposits of abnormal protein lewy bodies inside brain cells
build up in areas of brain responsible for memory and muscle movement
what may be the first symptoms of alzheimers
social withdrawal
mood disturbance
phenotype of frailty
unintentional weight loss, self reported exhaustion, weakness, slower walking speed, low physical activity
why is osteoporosis more common in women over 50
