• Friedrick Elbert, leader of SPD became temporary leader of Germany
• His first action was to sign the armistice
• He added laws to help German People
• He guaranteed freedom of speech, freedom of religion and arranged elections.
• Declared Germany an democratic nation. (not everyone pleased)

• Spartacist, was a were communist extremist who took over Berlin in 6th January 1919
• Elbert sent Free Corps (Former soldiers), to attack Spartacist. After three days of fighting Spartacist destroyed.
• Leaders, Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht killed and tortured.

• In Late January 1919 Elbert held the election as promised.
• His party of SPD won, and he became the new German president.
• Because of all the recent violence in Berlin he set up his government in a town called Weimar.
